SCHLIEMANN, HEINRICH

born Jan. 6, 1822, Neubukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin died Dec. 26, 1890, Naples German archaeologist and excavator of Troy, Mycenae, and Tiryns; he is often considered to be the modern discoverer of prehistoric Greece. Additional reading Schliemann's own books, Ilios (1880, reprinted 1968) and Troy and Its Remains (1875, reprinted 1968), deserve reading not only for their account of his own reconnaissances and excavations but also for the autobiographical material contained. For a well-documented, authoritative account of Schliemann and his work, see Leo Deuel, Memoirs of Heinrich Schliemann (1977), which is based on Schliemann's biographical writings, letters, and excavation reports. Carl Schuchhardt, Schliemanns Ausgrabungen im Lichte der heutigen Wissenschaft (1889; Schliemann's Excavations and Archaeological and Historical Studies, 1891, reprinted 1971), is a contemporary assessment of his role in the development of archaeology.
