SCOTTISH NATIONAL DICTIONARY

dictionary published in Edinburgh and containing all Scottish words known to be in use since about 1700. It is designed partly on regional lines and partly on historical principles. Work commenced on this 10-volume set in 1931 and reached completion in 1976. A two-volume abridgement, The Compact Scottish National Dictionary, appeared in 1986. In addition, work is going forward on the compilation of a dictionary of the Scottish language before 1700. Entry words in the Scottish National Dictionary have been collected from Scottish literature, public records, private collections, glossaries, and other dictionaries. The historical treatment, with origin given where possible, takes into account numerous forms of usage and meaning that evolved from different regions and districts of the country. The variant spellings and uses are listed precisely, obsolete or colloquial status is noted, and illustrative quotations augment each entry.
