SHENG-LI OIL FIELD

Meaning of SHENG-LI OIL FIELD in English

Pinyin Shengli, oil field in Shantung Province (sheng), China, one of the country's major sources of oil. Consisting of about 40 small fields, it is located southeast of Peking near the Gulf of Chihli south of the mouth of the Huang Ho (river). Drilling teams, brought in from the Ta-ch'ing oil field in Heilungkiang Province, began drilling in 1964 near the village of Sheng-li. The field began to produce oil in 1966 and by the 1970s had been considerably expanded; an oil refinery has been built and a pipeline about 700 mi (1,100 km) long (completed in 1979) connects Sheng-li and nearby Jen-ch'in oil fields with Nanking (southeast) on the Yangtze River. Crude oil production at Sheng-li in 1980 was estimated at roughly 420,000 bbl a day.
