national park in northern Minnesota, U.S. It lies along the Canadian border, east of International Falls. Established in 1975, it was named for the mostly French-Canadian frontiersmen who were involved in fur trading in the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The park occupies an area of 217,892 acres (88,178 hectares) and consists of a network of streams and lakes-the largest of which are Rainy (part), Namakan, and Kabetogama-in the heart of the North Woods. The park contains stands of fir, spruce, pine, aspen, and birch. Wildlife includes beaver and many varieties of native birds and waterfowl.
