a large and grand house near Peterborough in eastern England, built in the Elizabethan style in the 16th century. The inside of the house was decorated in the baroque style 100 years later, and in the 18th century the gardens were designed by ‘Capability’ Brown . Each autumn an important three-day event , the Burghley Horse Trials , takes place in the grounds.
