a Native American leader of the Sioux people. In 1876 he and Sitting Bull defeated General Custer and his soldiers at the Battle of Little Bighorn . He was captured and put in prison the following year, and was killed while trying to escape. A large Crazy Horse Memorial , showing him riding a horse, is being carved into Thunderhead Mountain in South Dakota .
