Meaning of ENGLAND EXPECTS in English

the first words of a famous signal sent by Admiral Nelson to the ships he commanded, before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The full signal was ‘England expects that every man will do his duty.’ The phrase ‘England expects’ is sometimes used in a humorous way today:

England expects nothing less than a win in today’s match.
