( in Britain ) a person who is learning to drive and has not yet passed the driving test. L-drivers must display L-plates , square signs with a large red letter L on a white background, on the front and rear of the vehicle they are driving. Plates with the letter L or P in green are also available, to indicate a driver who has recently passed the driving test.
