a leader of one of the Sioux peoples. He and Crazy Horse defeated General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn . He then lived for a short time in Canada but agreed in 1881 to settle with his people on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota , and in 1885 appeared in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show . Because he encouraged the Sioux to keep the Ghost Dance religion, US soldiers and Native-American police tried to arrest him and he was killed.
