the informal name for the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), the organization in charge of amateur athletics in Britain, which was established in 1880. It is also the name of the national competition which the AAA organizes every year and which was first held in 1886. Since athletics became a professional sport, both the organization and the event have become less important.
