the name given to periods of political and social disturbance in Ireland, especially in the 20th century. The expression is now often used to refer to the period of violence and terrorist activity between Roman Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland since 1968, but it has also been applied to events such as the Easter Rising (1916) and the Anglo-Irish War (1919–21). Thousands of people have been killed in the Troubles.
