(Water Quality) The second stage in the examination of water for the presence of bacteria of fecal origin. Cultures that are positive on the first portion of the testing procedure (the Presumptive Test) are inoculated into tubes of brilliant green lactose bile broth and examined for fermentation when incubated at 35C (95F) for 48 hours. If fermentation is present, a third stage, the Completed Test, is performed.
