INITIAL DETENTION

The volume of water on the ground, either in depressions or in transit, at the time active runoff begins. It is that part of precipitation that does not appear either as infiltration or runoff at the time active runoff begins. It includes interception by vegetal cover, depression storage, and evaporation during precipitation, but does not include surface detention.
