(Water Quality) The first of three steps in the analysis of water or wastewater for the presence of bacteria of fecal origin. Portions of a water sample are inoculated into lactose broth and incubated for 24 hours at 37°C (98.6°F). The presence of acid and gas after that time is a positive test, and the water is presumed to be contaminated. Also see Confirmed Test and Completed Test.
