the British government department that was responsible for defending and supporting ↑ justice , rights, and ↑ democracy . It was in charge of the Magistrates' Courts and the Crown Courts. Until 2003, the department was called the Lord Chancellor's Office. in 2007 the responsibilities of the Department for Constitutional Affairs were moved to the new Ministry of Justice.
