a former British government department, headed by the Lord Chancellor, which was in charge of the legal system and the courts in England and Wales, and was responsible for choosing judges. in 2003 it became part of the Department for Constitutional Affairs, which became the Ministry of Justice in 2007. There is a similar department in the US called the Department of Justice.
