ˌLord of the ˈRings, The BrE AmE
(1954–55) a novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, which continues the story of The Hobbit . It was written as a story for children, but many adults also read it. It takes place in a land called Middle-Earth, and has many strange magical characters in it, including the ↑ wizard Gandalf and a ↑ Hobbit called Frodo, who has to save the world from great evil. Peter Jackson, a FILM DIRECTOR from New Zealand, made three very successful and award-winning films based on the book: The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers , and The Return of the King .
