ICE AGE

A period of approximately 100,000 years during which large ice sheets cover much of North America and parts of Europe. The global mean temperature may be as much as 10 K cooler than at present. The current cycle of ice ages began about 3 million years ago and is studied by researchers of the Cenozoic era. The last ice age ended about 10,000 years ago.
