noun a duck (glaucionetta clangula), found in northern europe, asia, and america. the american variety (var. americana) is larger. called whistler, garrot, gowdy, pied widgeon, whiteside, curre, and doucker. barrow's golden-eye of america (g. islandica) is less common.
