The longest headstream of the Nile River and the largest tributary of Lake Victoria , it rises in Burundi near the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika and flows north, constituting the boundary between Tanzania and Rwanda. Turning east, it forms the boundary between Tanzania and Uganda before emptying into Lake Victoria. It is 429 mi (690 km) long.
