The chief western tributary of the Paraguay River , it rises in the eastern Andes Mountains in west-central Bolivia. It flows southeast through the Gran Chaco of Paraguay to join the Paraguay River opposite Asunción , after about 1,000 mi (1,600 km). It forms part of the border between Argentina and Paraguay.
