The chief headstream of the Amazon River , it is formed by the junction of the Urubamba rivers. It then meanders north to unite with the {{link=Mara%C3%B1%C3%B3n River">Marañón River and form the Amazon. It is navigable for about two-thirds of its 1,000-mi (1,610-km) length.
