city, Coffee and Dale counties, southeastern Alabama, U.S. Founded in 1884 near the settlement of Drake Eye, its economy was based on cotton until the Mexican boll weevil ravaged the area (191516), creating a need for a more diversified economy. The unusual Boll Weevil Monument (1919) in the public square symbolizes diversification from cotton to peanuts (groundnuts), mixed farming, and manufacturing. Ft. Rucker Army Aviation Center is nearby. Enterprise State Junior College was founded in 1965. Inc. 1896. Pop. (1992 est.) 20,597.
