also spelled Khasia, Khassee, Cossyah, or Kyi, one of several members of the Khasian branch of the Mon-Khmer family, which is itself a part of the Austroasiatic stock. Khasi is spoken by some 900,000 people living in the region surrounding the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya state, India. Khasi contains a number of words borrowed from Indo-Aryan languages, especially from Bengali and Hindi.
