son of the king in Shakespeare's King John. Henry appears out of nowhere in the final scene of the play when he succeeds his dying father as King Henry III. Although Shakespeare shows him in a favourable light, Henry is never previously mentioned, and his insignificance within the play as a whole provides a curious contrast to his cousins, Arthur and the Bastard, either of whom might seem better qualified to ascend the throne.
