village, Cook county, northeastern Illinois, U.S. River Forest is a western residential suburb of Chicago. Originally part of an area known as Harlem, it was settled in 1836 and was known as Thatcher until 1870, when it was laid out as River Forest. The village is the seat of Dominican University (1901) and Concordia University (1864). It has several buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, including the Winslow House (1893) and the River Forest Tennis Club (1906). Inc. 1880. Pop. (1996 est.) 11,444.
