private, coeducational institution of higher learning located in downtown Chicago, Ill., U.S. It includes the College of Arts and Sciences, Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration, Chicago Musical College, and the College of Education. It also includes Evelyn T. Stone University College. The university operates a branch in suburban Schaumberg and extension sites in the Little Village and Logan Square neighbourhoods of Chicago. In addition to undergraduate studies, Roosevelt University offers a selection of master's degree programs and doctoral programs in education. Total enrollment is approximately 6,300. The university was founded in 1945 to offer a diverse curriculum especially intended for a racially and culturally diverse urban student body. Since 1947 the university has been quartered in the Auditorium building, a national historic landmark designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. The suburban branch opened in 1978. Harold Washington, the first black mayor of Chicago, was a graduate of Roosevelt University.
