city, southeastern So Paulo state, Brazil, situated near the Rio Tamanduatei at 2,418 ft (737 m) above sea level. It was founded in 1631 by Benedictine monks. So Caetano do Sul was made the seat of a municipality in 1948 and is now part of the southeastern So Paulo metropolitan area. In the city, national and international companies are engaged in extracting and refining nonferrous minerals and in manufacturing automobiles, trucks, textiles, and appliances. Chemicals and pharmaceuticals are produced there. Pop. (1980) 163,082.
