city, Dakota county, southeastern Minnesota, U.S., on the Mississippi River, adjacent to the city of St. Paul. It was settled in the 1850s on the site of a Sioux Indian village (Kaposia, 183752). Before 1877 the South St. Paul area was included with West St. Paul. It is a rail centre with repair shops and is the site of the extensive St. Paul Union Stockyards (1886) and the Farmers Union Central Exchange, a farm-supply cooperative. Established industriesmeat-packing, tanning, and the production of building materialshave been supplemented by planned industrial development. Inc. 1887. Pop. (1991 est.) 20,459.
