TEN SLEEP

Meaning of TEN SLEEP in English

town, Washakie county, north-central Wyoming, U.S., situated in the Bighorn Basin, west of the Bighorn Mountains, 25 miles (40 km) east of Worland. The site, at the junction of Nowood and Ten Sleep creeks, was an Indian rest stop, so called because it was 10 days travel, or 10 sleeps, from Fort Laramie (southeast), Yellowstone Park (west-northwest), and the Indian Agency at Stillwater, Mont. (northwest). The scenic Ten Sleep Canyon and Powder River Pass (9,666 feet ) are immediately to the east. Near the entrance to the canyon is the Girl Scouts National Center West, acquired in 1968 and one of the world's largest encampments (15,000 acres [6,070 hectares]) with facilities for workshops and seminars. A conservation buffalo herd was begun at a nearby ranch in 1974. The village is a supply point for a livestock and tourist region. Pop. (1990) 311.
