French Brabant Wallon, province, south-central Belgium. It is bordered by the provinces of Flemish Brabant to the north, Lige to the southeast, Namur to the south, and Hainaut to the southwest. Walloon Brabant is French-speaking and was created in 1995 when Brabant province was divided into Walloon Brabant and Flemish Brabant provinces and the Brussels-Capital Region. Its capital is Wavre. Walloon Brabant occupies part of the undulating, low-lying Central Plateaus and rises to 545 feet (166 m) above sea level in the south. It is covered by fertile, well-cultivated loams. The Senne (Zenne), Dijle, and Gete rivers flow north across the province. The province's western half includes the communities of Tubize and Nivelles and is the site of metalworking, electromechanical engineering, and papermaking industries. The eastern half is mainly agricultural, producing wheat, sugar beets, and cattle. The province is connected by road, rail, and canal with the Brussels-Capital Region to the north. The Waterloo battlefield is in the northwest. Area 421 square miles (1,091 square km). Pop. (1993 est.) 329,614.
