French Conseil Mondial De L'alimentation, United Nations organization established by the UN General Assembly in December 1974 upon recommendation of the World Food Conference. The council meets annually and consists of 36 members, elected by the General Assembly. Rome-based, the organization coordinates information and suggests strategies for food policy, which it reports to the General Assembly. The council's priorities divide into five major categories within the developing countries: (1) increased food production, (2) increased and more efficient food-aid systems, (3) improved international nutritional conditions, (4) buildup of an international grain reserve as part of a global food security system, and (5) reduced food-trade barriers between developing and developed countries.
