a popular BBC television comedy series (1968–77) about an inefficient group of soldiers in the Home Guard whose job is to defend Warmington-on-Sea, an imaginary village on the south coast of England, during World War II . The phrase ‘dad’s army’ is now sometimes used in British English to refer to any group of old soldiers.
