the former name (still used, though not officially) of the British government department which operates abroad to gather secret information about other countries. MI6 is an abbreviation of Military Intelligence section 6. Like MI5 , its role changed in the early 1990s and its activities became much less secret. It is now called the Secret Intelligence Service.
