a large US company, established in 1927. It was one of the first to use jet passenger planes (in 1958) and the first to use Boeing 747 ‘jumbo jets’ regularly. One of these crashed in 1988 at Lockerbie , Scotland, after a bomb on board exploded. Because of this and financial problems, Pan Am went out of business in 1991.
