PENNY BLACK

Meaning of PENNY BLACK in English

n

a British stamp first produced in 1840. It cost one penny and had a picture of Queen Victoria on it. Because it was the first stamp in the world there was no need to print the word ‘Britain’ on it, and even today British stamps do not have the country’s name on them. Penny Blacks are now quite rare and highly valued.
