SELLAFIELD

Meaning of SELLAFIELD in English

a nuclear power station (= a building where electricity is produced) on the coast of north-west Britain, near the Lake District . It is the only centre in Britain for reprocessing the nuclear waste from other power stations (= making it into a form that can be used again). Most of the waste is converted into nuclear fuel, but some of it is stored at Sellafield. Local people are worried about this, since there are often reports of dangerous nuclear waste being allowed to escape into the environment:

The statistics on childhood leukaemia have put the government under renewed pressure to close the Sellafield plant.
