It is the story of two sisters, Elinor, who is very sensible, and Marianne, who is much more emotional. They fall in love with two men but discover that they are both engaged to be married to other women. When Edward, the man loved by Elinor, loses both his wealth and the woman he is engaged to marry, he is happy to marry Elinor, the woman he really loves. John, however, the man loved by Marianne, leaves her to marry a rich woman. She is sad for a time, but finally marries somebody else.
