a US drink that contains no alcohol but looks like a cocktail (= mixed alcoholic drink). It is usually made with lemon juice and grenadine (= a thick, sweet, red liquid made from fruit juice). Ice is added and often a cherry on top. It is popular with children and was named after the former child actor Shirley Temple .
