The surface stress in the atmosphere has been measured to be about 0.1 newton per square meter. The surface stress is a force per unit area exerted on the surface layer winds by the surface itself. It can be thought of as a retarding force (frictional drag) that results in a logarithmic reduction in the wind speed the closer one gets to the surface.
