(n.) An editing program in which text is operated on relative to the position of the pointer on the screen. Commands for entering, changing, and removing text involve moving the pointer to the area to be altered and performing the necessary operation. You can view changes on the screen as they are made. Examples include the UNIX® vi program. Contrast with line editor .
