PLACEBO-CONTROLLED TRIAL

a trial of an experimental therapy in which an inactive substance or mock therapy (placebo) is given to one group while the treatment under study is given to another; the results obtained in the different groups are then compared. Placebo is used to make the experience of the treatment and control group as similar as possible and to minimize bias due to the expectations of the patient or investigator.
