AGULHAS CURRENT

Meaning of AGULHAS CURRENT in English

surface oceanic current that is part of the westward-flowing South Equatorial Current, which turns southward along the east coast of Africa and then eastward to join the flow from Africa to Australia. A small part of Agulhas water may, however, continue westward around the Cape of Good Hope into the Atlantic. The Mozambique Current, between Madagascar and Africa, also feeds the Agulhas Current. Only 60 miles (100 km) wide, the Agulhas Current is estimated to flow at an average rate of 0.4 to 1.2 knots, its velocity depending on seasonal variations in South Equatorial Current velocity. One of the fastest-flowing currents in any ocean, it reaches an estimated top speed of 5 knots off the southeast coast of South Africa. Because it is fed from lower latitudes, the Agulhas Current is warm, ranging in temperature from 57 to 79 F (14 to 26 C) at the surface.
