CURWOOD, MOUNT

highest point (1,980 ft ) in Michigan, U.S., in the northern Upper Peninsula. It lies in Baraga County, 12 mi (19 km) east-southeast of L'Anse, inland from the Lake Superior shore and east of Baraga State Park in a wilderness recreational region of lakes and streams. It was named for James Oliver Curwood (18781927), who wrote of Michigan's great out-doors and sought retirement in the vicinity (in Letherby Homestead). The Huron Mountains, extending for about 20 mi along the south shore of Lake Superior, are close by to the northeast.
