An important steamer stop, it contains the customhouse and harbour master for ships proceeding up the Hooghly to Calcutta. Just south lies the fort of Chingrikhali. Diamond Harbour has a college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Pop. (1991 prelim.) 30,260.
