three natural sandstone bridges, carved by two winding streams that formed on the western slopes of Elk Ridge, in southeastern Utah, U.S., 42 miles (68 km) west of Blanding. Established in 1908, the national monument occupies a 12-square-mile (31-square-kilometre) site. The largest bridge, Sipapu, rises 220 feet (89 m) above the streambed and has a 268-foot span. The Kachina and Owachomo bridges are respectively 210 feet and 106 feet high with spans of 206 feet and 180 feet. There are many Indian ruins in the vicinity, and pictographs were carved on the abutments of Kachina by early cliff dwellers.
