district, Fife (q.v.) region, Scotland; created by the reorganization of 1975, it is part of the former county of Fife. The district is bounded on the north by the Firth of Tay and faces the North Sea on the east. It is mainly devoted to farming. Beef and dairy cattle are raised and cereal crops, potatoes, and sugar beets produced. There is engineering and the refining of sugar beets at Cupar, which is the seat of the district authority. St. Andrews is noted for its university and golf course. Area 295 square miles (765 square km). Pop. (1993 est.) 72,420.
