any member of the family Rhagionidae (order Diptera), usually found in wooded areas. These dark-coloured flies, between 8 and 15 mm (0.3 and 0.6 inch) long, have a rounded head, posteriorly tapering abdomen, and long legs. The larvae are found in soil and water. Most snipe flies do not bite. The females of the genus Symphoromyia, however, suck blood and are common pests on the Pacific coast of North America.
