a novel (1749) by John Cleland (1707–89) about the sexual adventures of a young woman in 18th–century London. Its original title was Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure . The book was banned in Britain when a company tried to publish it in 1963, and became very popular when it was finally published in 1970.
