FIRST PAST THE POST

Meaning of FIRST PAST THE POST in English

a phrase describing the British election system, in which the person with the highest number of votes is the winner, even if they only have one vote more than the person who comes second. In the same way, the party with the most MPs wins the election, even if they only have one more MP than the second party.
